How does hypnosis or hypnotherapy play a role in my healing?
Whats the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?
You will find many definitions for hypnosis.
I prefer to explain hypnosis in this manner:
Hypnosis is a natural, but altered state of consciousness that allows the subconscious mind to receive
suggestions and directions that would not normally be received if the person was not in hypnosis. Hypnosis is
an brain state that can be accurately measured and detected with a PETSCAN or MRI.
See Dr. Spiegel's studies at Stanford University about hypnosis research. Dr. Spiegel is a trained physician,
but he is not a trained hypnotherapist.
Common everyday hypnosis.....
For example: If you're driving your car and you happen to "zone out" and find yourself at a location with very
little memory of how you got their and your like....Damn...don't remember half the trip or Damn...missed my
exit! We call that "highway hypnosis".
The driver simply became hyperfocused, the conscious mind hopped in the passenger seat focused on what
ever it was thinking about while the subconscious mind took over the task of driving. Because there was no
violation of expection, meaning ... a deer didn't jump out in front of you while driving....so you kept driving
while in hyper-focused thought or highway hypnosis.
Now... if a deer would have jumped out in front of you during your highway hypnosis session you would have
most likely received a slap in the face by your conscious mind to wake up and you would slam on the breaks
or swerve out of the way of Bambi.
This safety default of the mind is important to note because your conscious mind is ALWAYS there to protect
you while you are in hypnosis. The conscious mind is never going to allow to follow any blatantly harmful
suggestions while you are in hypnosis. This why you may have heard a stage hypnotist performing a live
show explain to the audience that you'll never do anything you don't want to do while in hypnosis and that is
absolutely true. When people get on stage they are agreeing through a verbal contract of sorts to be a part
of the stage show and follow the verbal requests of the stage hypnotist that he gives throughout the show.
The hypnostist is going to pick out of the audience the 15% most hypnotic, what I call the Gifted-Hypnos.
These are also people willing to volunteer. They are typically naturally outgoing extraverted people who
would cluck like a chicken for simply the sake fun competition without any prior requirment of being
hypnotized to do so!
Like your conscious mind, amazingly your subconscious mind will protect you in a similar way. Your
subconscious mind while you are in hypnosis and during a hypnotherapy session, will never reveal a
memory, thought, feeling, or emotion that you are consciously not ready to process, address, discuss, or
heal. This is also why so many people have what is called "blocks" or "mental blocks" in hypnosis and this is
where the training, expierence, and skill of the hypnotherapist come into play. There are almost always going
to be blocks encountered in hypnotherapy, after all you're performing hypnotherapy to help you get things
done, changed, or healed that could not be done on your own or with the help of others in the past. It's all
about removing the blocks. You will receive a fuller understanding of blocks and their impact prior to your
hypnotherapy session. Blocks can be simple or extremely deep rooted and complicated. Your
hypnotherapist's ability to remove these blocks is the difference between a $50/hour and a $200/hr
hypnotherapist. The oddest part about blocks is that they are rarely what the client believes they are to be.
It's not uncommon for my clients to say, " I never would have thought it was that in a million years..." Perhaps
one day I will write a book on just "blocks". It would be interesting to read from any person's perspective of
understanding.
When a person is in hypnosis they also have greater access to the part of their brain that controls their
emotions as well as their autonomic nervous system.
Hypnotherapy is a scientific clinical artform of therapy. Hypnotherapy allows the conscious and subconscious
minds to work out issues and problems in a controlled and directed manner. Hypnotherapy can also be
viewed as a form of guided meditation where the hypnotherapist acts as an external GPS to help the client
seek their own answers and understanding to questions in the client's life.
